Beyond Salsa Piano is a history and anthology of the role of the piano in the Cuban rhythm section – from its first appearance to the present. In a broader sense, it’s a study of the tumbao – the art of creating music from layers of repeating rhythmic and melodic phrases. Whether these syncopated figures are called tumbaos, guajeos, montunos, riffs or vamps, this Afro-Cuban concept lies at the heart of nearly every popular music genre from salsa to rock , funk, R&B, hiphop and jazz.

While presented as a set of method books, the series doubles as a history course and record collecting guide for listeners, dancers, and players of instruments other than the piano.

Perhaps the most important goal of the series is to provide a comprehensive understanding of how tumbaos are constructed, their central role in the texture of Latin music of all eras, and the endless possibilities they provide for creative composing and arranging.

Gypsy influenced salsa.

Biography (English):
Orquesta Gitano was founded in the San Francisco Bay by "Bosco El Gitano", multi-percussionist of Nicaraguan and Estonian (Gypsy) heritage and cousin to legendary Santana percussionist "Chepito". The other 12 members hail from as far away as Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and New York.

For the last 18 years, Orquesta Gitano has played Latin dance music all over California, but their passion has always been great songwriting, inspired by the creativity of Ruben Blades, Willie Colon, The Fania All-Stars, and Juan Formell, as well as Mozart, The Beatles and other great composers of all genres. Orquesta Gitano's rhythms are familiar and danceable, but the songs are unique, each carefully and patiently painted from a musical palette of unlimited colors and each full of surprises at every turn, earning them consideration for the 1998 Grammy awards and a long series of rave reviews.

Orquesta Gitano's exciting, original style is a perfect combination of tradition and innovation, featuring the full range of exotic Afro-Cuban and Afro-Puerto Rican rhythms (salsa, plena, charanga, guaguanco, songo, cumbia, bolero, guaracha, merengue), all played with an intense, world-class swing that is perfect for dancing.

Complementing a tight, driving rhythm section of timbales, congas, bongo, guitar, violin, bass, piano and a powerful 4-piece brass section {2 trumpets & 2 trombones}, Orquesta Gitano features the incredible vocal talents of Cuban-born Sonero, Mario "Rumbero" Perez, commanding a huge vocal range as he moves effortlessly from Salsa to Bolero to intense, heartfelt rumba singing. New to the 2nd CD is Eduardo "Sabroso" Herrera, who brings a very smooth, contemporary vocal style to Orquesta Gitano's Salsa Fusion.

Gitano's contemporary Salsa style has put them on the same bill with such legends as Tito Puente, Changuito, Patato, Mongo Santamaria, Orestes Vilato, Willie Colon, Poncho Sanchez, Armando Peraza, Los Hermanos Moreno, Conjunto Cespedes, Airto Morenira and Flora Purim, the Neville Bros, and Third World.

On March Saturday 21st 1998, THE SALSA HOTLINE held its 4th Annual "TIMBALERO EXTRAVAGANZA" at Mr. E's Jazz Club in Berkeley Calif., where Bosco El Gitano was a featured soloist (along with Benny Velarde, Richie Velez, Carlos Caro and Louie Romero) and was presented with an ' LATIN MUSIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD" for his distinctive timbale style.
