LA TIMBA LA TRAIGO YO - Nuevo Disco + Gira Europa de Robert Armas y los Conquistadores de la Salsa
Música tropical de Cuba y Francia - Rubén Paz y Chéverefusión
Beyond Salsa Piano is a history and anthology of the role of the piano in the Cuban rhythm section – from its first appearance to the present. In a broader sense, it’s a study of the tumbao – the art of creating music from layers of repeating rhythmic and melodic phrases. Whether these syncopated figures are called tumbaos, guajeos, montunos, riffs or vamps, this Afro-Cuban concept lies at the heart of nearly every popular music genre from salsa to rock , funk, R&B, hiphop and jazz.

While presented as a set of method books, the series doubles as a history course and record collecting guide for listeners, dancers, and players of instruments other than the piano.

Perhaps the most important goal of the series is to provide a comprehensive understanding of how tumbaos are constructed, their central role in the texture of Latin music of all eras, and the endless possibilities they provide for creative composing and arranging.

Issac's final disc for the now defunct label RMM, "La Primera Noche" contains lots of smooth, well-crafted and emotionally satisfying vocal tracks which don't necessarily sound like hardcore Timba. However it has a handful of numbers which have become staples of Issac's incomparable live concerts, including "La Sandunguita", "Amigo Juan" and "Que Me Disculpen" -- all written by bassist Alain Pérez.
La Primera Noche alternate cover

When Melón moved to Spain, the very capable synthesizer player, Pepe Rivero, took over on piano and Alain Pérez took full control of the arranging as well as doing much of the songwriting. The rest of the group remained largely the same and it was this incarnation of the band that recorded Issac's final disc for RMM, "La primera noche". Like most of Issac's discs, it contains lots of smooth, well-crafted and emotionally satisfying vocal tracks which don't necessarily sound like hardcore Timba. However it also contains a handful of numbers which have become staples of Issac's incomparable live concerts, including "La Sandunguita", "Amigo Juan" and "Que Me Disculpen" -- all written by Alain Pérez. Joaquín Betancourt wrote the title song and contributed an arrangement, "Amigo", before returning to a much more active arranging role in the subsequent two albums. -- Kevin Moore of www.TIMBA.com
