Beyond Salsa Piano is a history and anthology of the role of the piano in the Cuban rhythm section – from its first appearance to the present. In a broader sense, it’s a study of the tumbao – the art of creating music from layers of repeating rhythmic and melodic phrases. Whether these syncopated figures are called tumbaos, guajeos, montunos, riffs or vamps, this Afro-Cuban concept lies at the heart of nearly every popular music genre from salsa to rock , funk, R&B, hiphop and jazz.

While presented as a set of method books, the series doubles as a history course and record collecting guide for listeners, dancers, and players of instruments other than the piano.

Perhaps the most important goal of the series is to provide a comprehensive understanding of how tumbaos are constructed, their central role in the texture of Latin music of all eras, and the endless possibilities they provide for creative composing and arranging.

With a calm, relaxed and unpretentious voice, Nelson Manuel’s new group delivers classic Havana sounding Timba. His clear voice and phrasing style create a nice contrast with the very intense music filled with cool breakdowns and coros.

Nelson Manuel Cotrina Gutiérrez, is today one of the most outstanding singers of the current Cuban music scene. Born in Havana, Santa Delicia (Mariano), his career started by featuring at the most popular Cuban orchestras such as “La Monumental”, conducted by the master Daniel Rojas. During that time he continued his music studies at the school Felix Varela, achieving a perfect command of his voice, shaping it and injecting the essence of the Cuban music to his compositions.

By 1998 all this experience attracted a producer who hired him to work as a soloist together with the vedette Maria Antonieta, on the show “Habana, Ritmo y Sabor”, which ran in Mexico, under the artistic conduction of Juan Carlos Moreno. Due to his international fame Nelson Manuel was called once again to release a second production in 2001. The show 'Cubanísimo Superior', directed by the famous choreographer and artistic director Tomás Morales, who began at the most famous cabaret: La Tropicana. Nelson Manuel decided to make up his own orchestra on November 13th of 2003. Nelson’s musical concept is to maintain himself on the wave of the best Cuban rhythms, guided by singers such as Issac Delgado, the Cuban salsa star, and Los Van Van, the monster of continental timba.
